    1. This is optional and interested students can include the study of a country of their own choice. If you decide to have a case study you will be expected to develop an in-depth knowledge of your case-country's engagement with Western modernity, gathering data about the historical and contemporary issues as you progress in the module. This is an independent piece of research but will be theoretically informed by the content of the module. You particularly encouraged to take responsibility to ‗lead research' based on academic and web-based sources and this independent research have to reflect both an understanding of theories of Islam and Western modernity and, more importantly, the application of this theoretical knowledge to the empirical analysis of the chosen case-studies. Students are expected to develop a critically articulated discourse of Islam and modernity in the context of a country study at the end of the module.
